The simplest tweaks can really elevate your outfits. Outfits come together around one shape, and coats tend to dominate because they’re the outer layer. Sometimes I like to complement the shape of the coat: when the coat refines the shape of the body, e.g. hourglass or A-line. For hourglass or A-line coats, I pick pants that continue their lines.
I also love coats that deliberately sculpt a shape away from the body; oversized, straight, or cocoon coats come to mind. With these coats, I like the pant to bring back the body and contrast a bit with the big shape.
Classic coats have the most versatility. They look excellent with straight pants or jeans, and they also pair beautifully with moderate sailor jeans. They're stunning with pleated pants.
Oversized, Straight, or Cocoon Coats
All these coats create shapes that are independent from the body, and I contrast that volume with pants that are closer to the body. The result is that the coat is the focal point, and the body takes its own shape rather than get lost in oversized pieces. In fact, the contrast with the exaggerated coat makes the figure all the more glorious.
Hourglass
Hourglass coats have strong shoulders and a nipped-in waist. I prefer to pair these coats with flared or wide pants. The shape of the pants continues the shape of the coat, and you get something truly sublime together.
