Love Story Got CBK's Jeans Wrong

When the first set photos from Love Story leaked, the backlash was immediate. The original costume designer was replaced. Rudy Mance came on, sourced almost entirely vintage, and consulted a CBK fashion biographer. The team sourced her exact Manolo Blahnik heels and her Prada boots. They hired a handbag expert to scuff a Birkin to match the one she actually carried.

And they still got the jeans wrong.

The failure isn't in the brands. It's in a fundamental misunderstanding of her style. Too much CBK content follows the show's lead by focusing on her Pradas, Hermès, and Levi's, but nobody is talking about what actually made the look work.

The Styling Secret

Carolyn's tops were hip-length knits, full-length open shirts worn loose, or a coat covering everything. She almost never tucked into jeans. As a result, the waistband disappeared under the top, and with it, the utilitarian features at the top of the jeans – belt loops, metal button, topstitching. By obscuring these details, she made the look more minimal. The choice to untuck lends an informal touch, and the whole look reads as effortless rather than assembled.

The show recreated her with a front tuck, popular in the 2010s and currently maligned as the "millennial tuck" for its staleness.
